The Christmas Song
Mel Tormé wrote this huge hit pretty much by accident. His collaborator Bob Wells had left some jottings lying around which mentioned "chestnuts roasting", "Jack Frost" and other wintry images which were not intended as lyrics but as an attempt at auto-suggestion to combat the summer heat of 1944. Tormé set them to music anyway, with an extraordinary harmonic progression that winds itself round the listener like a long woolly scarf.
