Gabrieli Canzonas

The idea of transcribing Venetian music for brass band felt wrong at first - we are more accustomed to hearing it played on a small group of symphonic instruments. But when the first in this series (Canzona a Quattro No.2) was premiered by a 60-strong band at a festival in Manchester, England, the precedent was well and truly set, to the delight of players and audience alike.

In the scores the instruments from trombones downwards are written at concert pitch which modern conductors seem to find easier. The parts are supplied in both bass clef and conventional treble. There are also parts for F horns.
