Vaughan Williams wished that once the musical score of a film had been composed, then the action would follow it, an ideal at odds with the reality of motion picture production. Thus much of the fine music that he wrote for Scott Of The Antarctic (1948) was altered or omitted from the finished release and has been rediscovered only in the last few years. Some of it he had given new life in his Antarctic Symphony of 1952, and the numbers in this selection will be familiar from that if not from the original movie: they include Opening Titles; Ship’s Departure; Penguin Dance; Pony March; The Return; Descending The Glacier; and End Titles - all as originally composed.
