Very much of its time and place, i.e. very French and very sixties, Claude Lelouch's film won huge critical acclaim for breathing new life into clichés. Unusually, the music was recorded in advance of the shooting and was played on set to inspire the actors, who didn't always have much script to work with. Francis Lai's harmonies sound wonderful on brass.
