Merritts Hill Music

Russian Marches

The marches in this collection are mostly anonymous; although we do know that one of them was written by an ancestor of the famous Rimsky-Korsakov. Military commanders were often educated enough to write music if required - the Rimsky dynasty was a military one and Nikolai was a naval officer long before he took up music.

The instrumentation is based on the original Russian: a self-contained brass band with additional woodwind and orchestral brass; then are added all the different sizes of clarinets and saxophones common in the West so that these arrangements work for any band anywhere.
